Glasgow Lives: James, 29, city centre, founder and director of Ryan James Studio
James lived in London and New York before coming home to start his own business - here's why it had to be Glasgow for him
I was in London for five and a half years doing visual merchandising for a lot of big clothing companies. My last job down there was with House of Fraser.
London was great and a lot of fun but I just got to the point where it felt like time for a new challenge.
I’d been thinking about opening my own clothes shop for a good few years, so I quit my job and travelled for a while.
I spent a lot of time in the States, particularly in New York.
I spent a lot of time thinking about my brand and what I wanted the shop to be.
New York was a massive inspiration and encouragement for me but I knew it was time to come home to Glasgow to try opening the shop.
There’s so many opportunities and great things happening here just now. I’ve been able to tie in with loads of events and pop ups to get exposure.
The shop launched in July. I basically curate the clothing and products to tell different stories.
The clothes I stock create capsule wardrobes throughout a variety of brands. A lot of the clothes are made here in the UK.
It’s only been three months and as each month passes more people find out about the shop and they’re really positive about it.
I think Glaswegians are stylish, there’s a confidence about us.
Glaswegians are open to trying new things and to being supportive of them.
